April Fools!

Worst-tricks-to-play-on-an-Infertile-person list:

  • Announcing a pregnancy as a joke: want to know something hysterically not-funny? Having to suck it up and pretend to be excited for a friend who claims she is pregnant and then find out after you’ve swallowed all your sadness and frustration (because while she is knocked up, you just had another negative cycle) and gotten yourself to a place where you are honestly happy for her, that it’s just a joke. Because fake pregnancies are funny!
  • All your embryos arrested: having your nurse call to tell you that all of your embryos arrested overnight and your transfer has been canceled only to change her tune after your heart has dropped into your stomach by shouting, “April Fools! You have six beautiful blasts!”
  • This cycle is on the house: telling a patient that the $12,000 IVF cycle with ICSI is being comped by the clinic only to tell her (after the huge sigh of relief) that you’re just kidding–the financial department would like you to cough up the cash by your next appointment.

What else would break your heart today?

(additionally, check out the penis and vagina fertility festival on my BlogHer post today.  “Some 40 grown men strain under the weight of a massive vagina while carrying it to the shrine in the main parade. They’re followed by two smaller vagina litters.” No joke).

Hearing “you’ve been picked as the adoptive mother!” and finding out it was an April Fools joke.

That is cruel. I hope people don’t really make these jokes ?
In my case, what would break my heart would be that I am too old to become pregnant, that I’m premonopausal, on my last miles…at 35 years-old.

I actually experienced the fake pregnancy announcement this morning…NOT COOL!

I definitely think the “you’ve been matched” thing would send me right to a mental hospital. So would DH telling me he doesn’t want to have children anymore.

I think I would die. Thankfully I know he would never do that, but it would really SUCK!

Josh and I shook hands last night and agreed on no jokes.

Ugh..those are the worst. I can’t even think of anything worse, and I don’t want to. We don’t do April’s Fools…it’s too painful.

I hate this day. Too many, “Oops, I’m pregnant!” announcements on Facebook. I feel like posting one that says, “Oops! I’m still infertile!”

I am not a fan of practical jokes… which is why I am not leaving the couch today because I don’t want to go into labor.

My husband’s cousin’s teenage girlfriend (got that?) once played an April Fools joke on the cousin and his mom by bringing over a fake positive pregnancy test, setting it on the counter, and informing them she was pregnant.

Ha ha ha. Classy.

Those aren’t funny, they are mean.

9 Emily { 04.01.10 at 1:54 pm }

How about “Oh shoot…we put the wrong embryos back in!”

10 Michelle { 04.01.10 at 2:36 pm }

My nurse had to call this morning with the results for DH’s TESE surgery. I told DH I was going to be Very Very angry if she April Fooled me. She didn’t. Thank goodness!

I’m more of a rubber band on the water squirter on the sink kind of Gal…not into lies.

12 Melissa G. { 04.01.10 at 3:26 pm }

I’m with Mrs Spit. That’s just mean.

I had an April fools joke played on me this morning but it was NHL Playoff related… You don’t even want to know.

I just finished writing a post about a facebook fake pregnancy announcement! Sooo not funny. I hate April Fool’s Day…I’ve seen a few examples (mostly on Facebook) where people just end up looking dumb or gullible. It makes me uncomfortable all around.

14 Ceejay { 04.01.10 at 4:00 pm }

Yup. Just had a friend announce she was pregnant on facebook. She’s been married three months. I’m pretty sure it’s a joke, but it hasn’t been confirmed yet. So. Not. Funny.

I sort of completely forgot it was April Fool’s Day, which makes me all the more grateful that the OB kept muttering “C’mon, I can hear you in there” while she was trying to find the heartbeat with the doppler. I agree with all the other posters that most of those miss “practical joke” by a mile and fall under just plain cruel. Of course, my taste in practical jokes runs more to the fill-the-cubicle-with-packing-peanuts-and-wrap-it-in-shrink-wrap type of joke.

Yep, also seen the FB fake pregnancy announcement. Complete with pictures of the +HPT. I was *thisclose* to responding with a message about how that’s NOT funny to people who would give anything to see a real +HPT, but I decided it would fall on deaf ears. Totally made me think differently of this person, however.

Um…y’all know that I didn’t come up with two of those. I actually read an infertile pg announcement this morning. As in, the infertile woman announced her pregnancy and then admitted it was a joke. And guess what? I didn’t laugh. #3 I heard too. #2 just seemed like another dumbass thing that could happen to go with the other two dumbass pranks. Jokes that just aren’t funny.

18 HereWeGoAJen { 04.01.10 at 4:41 pm }

I had forgotten that it was April Fools. I’m glad you reminded me.

19 Myndi { 04.01.10 at 4:58 pm }

I was at the dentist this morning and the assistant was asking me what she should do to prank her boyfriend. She said she considered the pregnancy thing, but didn’t think it’d be funny because it probably wouldn’t upset him…so what’s the point? Huh. Pregnancy as a nightmare or a joke. I don’t get it.

20 LJ { 04.01.10 at 5:07 pm }

I found out I was pregnant on April Fools’ Day three years ago…and started bleeding the next day. That sucked.

21 Kitty { 04.01.10 at 6:05 pm }

Hm… Just saw that my SIL posted the “joke” about being pregnant on FB. We have some rocky history between us, and she knows allll about my issues. So that’s a nice little slap in the face. Why are people such idiots?

22 Kristin (kekis) { 04.01.10 at 6:22 pm }

Even as an elementary teacher, I was somehow spared of the irritation & pain that today can bring. I did write a post about a joke I played many years ago. Ugh. http://fertileramblings.blogspot.com/2010/04/oh-irony.html

23 Chickenpig { 04.01.10 at 6:48 pm }

Emily FTW! I can almost hear the jokers at my clinic on the phone now “We hate to tell you this, but we transferred your remaining frozen embryos into another patient by mistake, and now she’s pregnant….with quads. You’ve got a couple of days to decide if the couple should abort this pregnancy, or turn the babies over to you at birth. Ok…bye.” Then they wouldn’t tell me it was a joke until I called them with our decision.

I pride myself in the fact that I can torture myself better than others can torture me 🙂

24 Julie { 04.01.10 at 9:46 pm }

Seriously?

An infertile announced a fake pregnancy? Among other infertiles?

I…hardly know what to say.

25 Calliope { 04.01.10 at 11:07 pm }

two years ago, on April 1, you e-mailed me about UTERUS. And I didn’t believe it was real until we e-mailed again the next day.

Fake pg announcements make me ill.

26 NotTheMama { 04.02.10 at 12:43 am }

How ’bout this? My left ovary decided it needed its own little April Fool’s joke. According to the nurse, I had a cyst that has ruptured. This was not a good week for pain, and not a good weekend for bleeding… I’m supposed to be singing and leading games tomorrow night @ a church service. And it’s *not* a joke that on Monday, we will be playing fruit basket turnover @ work, which will likely result in firing, quitting, and weeping and gnashing of teeth! Only half of the office even knows, and we found out late this afternoon. April Fool’s indeed!

27 Battynurse { 04.02.10 at 12:44 am }

Ok so back in a time when I wasn’t looking at IF and the possibility of living childless I did used to think that the fake pregnancy announcement was sort of funny. Now of course not so much. I agree with some of the others though, those are cruel and tasteless. Me, I just made a crazy cake. I will say that I saw a couple ideas above I liked though. Like the shipping peanuts in the cubicle thing.

28 Sarang { 04.02.10 at 2:25 am }

Yup, experienced the fake pregnancy April Fool’s announcement today, too!

29 S.I.F. { 04.02.10 at 4:12 am }

My nurse actually called me yesterday and told me that my pre-HSG pregnancy test came back negative (to which I had to reply – well, duh! There is a reason we are doing IVF in a few months!! She said part of her was hoping though, which was sweet), but today I realized that if she had called and said it was positive that would have broken me. Not that I would have believed her (1 very broken tube, 2 busted ovaries, and a world of scar tissue – not to mention, it’s been a while since I saw a man naked!) but it still would be a mean thing to say!

I heard from a friend of a friend about a girl who pretended to be pregnant today. I was not pleased. Mostly I was just mad that there are people in this world who could pretend they are pregnant, and others would actually believe them. At this point if I said something like that (on April Fools day of all days!) no one in my life would even bat an eye!

How about your apparently IF sister (a possible PCOS diagnosis & not even TTC yet **insert rolly-eyes here**) sending you a text saying “Guess What?”

Give me strength.
