"Dressing up" for a school dance meant wearing corduroys instead of jeans -- & only if you'd consulted half a dozen of your friends beforehand & got them to agree to wear THEIR cords too. Things got slightly dressier in my last year or so (1978-79), under the influence of Annie Hall, Saturday Night Fever & disco. For the first day of Grade 12, I wore a long, knife-pleated plaid skirt, white satin blouse under salmon coloured sweater vest & grey flannel blazer with a skinny black tie, and Mary Jane shoes. I was soooo proud of that outfit.
